After a bit of investigation, this looks like a bug in RedCloth (Textile rendering module).
If you use the same testcase on http://redcloth.org/, you will get the same result.
Furthermore, this issue will also occur with various other characters that are not considered "letters", for instance '"!#$%?&()=.
I am not well versed in the Textile specification, but either it has to do with some overlapping requirements or it is simply an issue with RedCloth rendering.
