ChiliProject is not maintained anymore. Please be advised that there will be no more updates.

We do not recommend that you setup new ChiliProject instances and we urge all existing users to migrate their data to a maintained system, e.g. Redmine. We will provide a migration script later. In the meantime, you can use the instructions by Christian Daehn.

Future of ChiliProject

Added by Marc Dressel at 2012-07-14 11:04 pm

Hi,

I noticed that the founder of ChiliProject (Eric Davis) was not here since 23.05.2012 and was not active even longer.
Simultaneously the overall activity of the project decreased significant.
Now I have seen that Eric is quite active on his Redmine branch on GitHub:
https://github.com/edavis10
I wonder what that means for the future of ChiliProject.

ChiliProject is a candidate as collaboration platform for our company (ca. 1000 employees).
But at the moment it seems to be less risky to go with Redmine or Sharepoint.
Are my concerns unfounded?

I understand that this is maybe not a comfortable topic...

Best regards,
Marc

Eric wasn't the only dev involved in the fork, the "why fork" text lists 5 others. But IMHO neither of the two projects is gaining momentum.

I administer our company's redmine instance and although there's no better software for the task, a whole lot of the plugins are outdated and do not work in the latest releases.

Aynway, I'd like to see efforts combined, which doesn't necessarily mean a re-join...
I find Marc's question interesting and wait for an "official" answer :-)

I hope I'll have more time to address these questions to greater lengths as needed later, but here's a quick rundown in the meantime:

Marc Dressel wrote:

Saying that Eric is the founder is only true to some extent: He was the most "visible" of the founding members but by far isn't the only developer or person that participated or still participates in ChiliProject.

Now I have seen that Eric is quite active on his Redmine branch on GitHub:

That's just the cron that syncs the Redmine svn to his github mirror of Redmine that still runs. If you notice the wording it says Eric pushed the commits, that doesn't mean he authored them. If you look at the commit list, you'll see that all the commits are actually those done to Redmine by JPL, Toshi and so on.

ChiliProject is a candidate as collaboration platform for our company (ca. 1000 employees).

Glad to hear it :-)

Regarding the stability of the project, I'd say yes, but I'm obviously biased :-) I understand this is a criteria though, so if there's anything we can provide or inform you with, let us know.

As to Eric personally, this year brought different important things for him to take care of, amongst other things a new family member, that's why he took a step back from Chili.

I understand that this is maybe not a comfortable topic...

Not at all, I'm happy (the others probably too, some of them are not as comfortable with "non-technical stuff" though :-) ) to answer questions if needed.

Eric has stepped down as the project lead in July last year due to personal reasons. You can read some background about it in the blog posts on the ChiliProject blog and Eric's personal blog

That said, the project is alive and going. Expect great things to come :)
